BIS Chennai Conducts Industry Sensitization Program on Quality Control Orders

Bureau of Indian Standards is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It operates various schemes like Product Certification (ISI Mark), Management Systems Certification, Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts and Laboratory Services for the benefit of the industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection. 


As per Section 16 of BIS Act 2016, the Central Government may issue Quality Control Orders covering certain products under the regime of BIS Compulsory Certification Scheme, for the reasons of public interest or for the protection of human, animal or plant health, safety of the environment, or prevention of unfair trade practices, or national security. 


Under such provisions, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, through the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade had issued Cast Iron Products (Quality Control) Order, 2023 & Ministry of Mines had issued the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Order, 2023 to bring Cast Iron Products and Aluminium Alloys under the ambit of BIS Compulsory Certification Scheme. 


Accordingly, Bureau of Indian Standards, Chennai Branch Office in association with The Indian Institute of Foundrymen, Chennai Chapter (IIF) organized an Industry Sensitization Programme on Quality Control Orders for Cast Iron Products  (IS 1726, IS 1729, IS 1879, IS 13349, IS 210, IS 1537) & Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys  (IS 617, IS 11890, IS 6754, IS 2590, IS 4026) at Anna University - Alumni Club, Chennai on 16 April 2024,Evening. 


Shri USP Yadav, Scientist-F & Deputy Director General (Southern Region), BIS ; Smt.G.Bhavani, Scientist-E/Director & Head (Chennai Branch Office), BIS  and Shri. V K Raman, Chairman, IIF, Chennai; Shri. P Senthil Kumar, Hon. Secretary, IIF, Chennai and other Officers from BIS & IIF addressed the participants about the importance of this Programme. 


Shri. Arun Pucchakayala, Scientist D/Joint Director conducted technical Session on Indian Standards covered under Cast Iron Products (Quality Control) Order & Aluminium and Aluminium Alloys (Quality Control) Order; 


Shri. Gowththam B J ,Scientist D/Joint Director Explained the participants about How to apply for BIS Certification Licence; Understanding Product Manuals & Provisions of BIS Act 2016


Through this programme, BIS Chennai aims at effective implementation of the above Quality Control Orders through the Certification of the industrial units manufacturing the above products.


Around  40  participants attended the Programme.
