In connection with Diamond Jubilee celebrations at NIT-Trichy, Department of Instrumentation and Control Engineering (ICE), NIT Trichy had organised a guest lecture by Dr. Tamilarasan (Pulmonary Medicine), Consultant Interventional Pulmonologist, Apollo Speciality Hospitals, Trichy on ‘Diagnostic and Assistive Devices in Respiratory System’.
Dr N Sivakumaran, Professor, Dept of ICE, NITT welcomed the gathering and introduced the guest. Dr Dhanalakshmi, HoD, ICE had presented a memento to Dr. Tamilarasan. He has discussed the importance of instrumentation techniques in the diagnosis of various respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, emphysema, and more.
He also expressed the role of instrumentation in diagnosis, challenges and role of assistive devices during COVID-19. He also explained on COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease) and challenges faced in diagnosis and tailored treatment plans for patients, emphasizing the importance of optimal lung health and improved quality of life.
Dr. Tamilarasan also expressed the need for advanced skills in pulmonary medicine and bronchoscopy enable him to perform non-invasive ventilation, sleep studies, and other diagnostic procedures effectively, ensuring accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plans for patients.
Further, he also highlighted some of the challenging research problems in this serious pulmonary disorder and emphasized the importance of research in India with advanced models, measurements and control strategies. He also stressed the importance of students to develop low-cost prototypes and added that the research on respiratory measurements is very much needed for patients’ speedy recovery. He concluded his talk with dos and don’ts on various Allergic Lung disease for patients.
