The Amalchem club, Department of Chemistry, Lady Doak College organized various scientific skill-based competitions for Government School Students under the title "Vedhi Vidhaigal" on 12.08.2024 at JX Miller Auditorium. Nearly 43 students from fourteen Government schools of Madurai district participated in the event and displayed their skills.
Dr. V. Sridevi, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Chemistry, delivered the welcome address. Dr. R. Beulah Jayashree, Principal & Secretary of the College, presided and delivered the introductory remarks. Mrs. C. Vennila Devi, District Coordinator for NEET, JEE Exams, PG Assistant, Chemistry, Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Parapathi and alumna of the Department of Chemistry (1994 batch) addressed the students and encouraged them to remain self-confident and explore scientific concepts with a creative perspective.
During the event, various consumer products developed by the Department of Chemistry including dustless chalk pieces, biodegradable sanitary napkins and organic sanitizer were launched. Dr. S. K. Suja, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry explained the importance, relevance, and practical use of these consumer products. The inauguration ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. P. Silviya Reeta, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry.
Thereafter, three competitions, poster-making for class IX students on the theme "The Role of Chemistry in Everyday Life," elocution competition for class VIII students on "The Role of Chemistry in Creating a Sustainable Environment”, a working model competition on the theme “ Green Technologies for a Sustainable Environment” for Class XI students, were conducted. The program ended with the valedictory session and prize distribution. Dr. S. Mahalakshmi, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry welcomed the gathering.
The guest of honor, Mrs. K. Karthika, M.Sc., B.Ed., Chief Education Officer, Madurai delivered the valedictory address and emphasized the students to participate in such competitions, visit premier institutions, explore various courses and facilities available at colleges and distributed prizes to the prize winners.
