Seminar on International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

Department of Visual Communication, Sociology and Computer Science, Mother Teresa Women’s University, Madurai Campus organised a seminar on International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples to honour and recognize the rich heritage, traditions, and contributions of Indigenous communities worldwide.


The event commenced with the Tamil Thai Vazhthu followed by the University Anthem, setting a respectful and ceremonial tone for the day.  Dr. Anusuah R., Assistant Professor from the Department of Visual Communication, delivered the Welcome Address. 


Dr. M. Pushpa Rani, Director, Professor, and Head of the Department of Computer Science at Madurai Campus, delivered the Inaugural Address, providing insightful perspectives on the significance of the day and the contributions of indigenous peoples. In her speech, she highlighted the importance of the 4 ‘E’ in Indigenous people’s upliftment, Education, Empowerment, Equity and Equality. 


Dr. B. Sheela, Registrar of Mother Teresa Women's University, Kodaikanal, delivered Chief Guest Address, highlighting the importance of preserving and celebrating indigenous cultures. Later in the session, She spoke about the importance of preserving and celebrating indigenous cultures, elaborating on the way of Tribal life, language, dress, and habitation of various tribal communities. Dr. Sheela highlighted that there are approximately 645 tribes in India, which are recognized under Schedule 5 of the Indian Constitution. She further discussed the origins, culture, social life, art, and architecture of these tribes with photographs from her research work. 


Dr. S. Nagarathinam, Professor and Head of the Department of Linguistics and Communication at Madurai Kamaraj University, delivered the Guest of Honor Address, offering valuable insights and reflections on the Indigenous Community.  In his session, he presented a detailed lecture on the food habits of various tribes in South Tamil Nadu, as well as their unique cultural and communication practices.


The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. A. Muthu Lakshmi, HOD I/C of the Department of Sociology and Social Work. Dr. Muthulakshmi expressed gratitude to all those involved in making the event a success.


The afternoon session was featured with  Cultural Programs performed by students from the Department of Sociology and Social Work, showcasing their talent and celebrating the diverse cultural heritage of Indigenous communities.


The event provided a meaningful platform to celebrate and reflect on the contributions of indigenous peoples, fostering a deeper appreciation for their cultural heritage. 300 students participated in this event.
