The Madurai Campus of Mother Teresa Women’s University was abuzz with joy and traditional fervour as over 300 students and 20 staff members gathered to celebrate Pongal, the harvest festival that honours nature and agriculture.
Dr. M. Pushpa Rani, the Director of the campus, graced the occasion with a special address, emphasizing the cultural and agricultural significance of Pongal. She highlighted the importance of preserving traditional values in today’s modern world, stating, “Pongal is not just a festival; it is a celebration of gratitude towards nature and the hard work of our farmers. Let us uphold these values and pass them on to future generations.”
The celebration featured a host of vibrant activities, including traditional Pongal cooking, folk dances, and kolam (rangoli) competitions, which showcased the creativity and enthusiasm of the students. Dressed in colourful traditional attire, participants performed to the rhythm of Tamil folk songs, creating an atmosphere of unity and joy.
The event concluded with the ceremonial preparation of Pongal, the traditional sweet dish made of rice, milk, and jaggery, symbolizing prosperity. The students and staff shared the freshly cooked Pongal, reinforcing the spirit of togetherness and community.
