Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India working under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India, has been at the forefront of establishing and promoting Indian Standards across various sectors, ensuring Quality and Safety for both Consumers and Industries.
As part of the World Standards Day - 2025 Celebrations, BIS Coimbatore, set up a first of its kind – digital interactive Stall at Tamil Nadu Global Startup Summit 2025 (TNGSS) held at Coimbatore on 9th and 10th October 2025.
The BIS stall at TNGSS 2025 which was located at Hall-C, in the Government of India Pavilion along with other departments/organizations such as DPIIT, GeM, IFCI, IGCAR, NIFTEM, ARAI, ICAI, etc. was conceived to raise awareness among startups, manufacturers, Govt. policy makers and stakeholders about the role of BIS in ensuring product quality, safety, and compliance. The summit featured over 750 stalls in the exhibition area, representing tech-sectors and Government departments. More than 71,000 visitors attended this two day summit which was inaugurated by Thiru. M.K.Stalin, Honourable Chief Minister, Government of Tamil Nadu.
The BIS stall was outfitted with 55 inch interactive digital display board where visitors can interact themselves to know about the standards of BIS, BIS CARE app, and an interactive house model to understand the Indian Standards (IS) on household products indicating the nature of certification. The display board also consist Indian Standards numbers categorized based on purpose such as Agricultural equipment, pipes, personal care, etc.
To further enhance the awareness and participation, the BIS Coimbatore, introduced “Stand4Standards Selfie Contest”, powered by AI enabled selfie bot “Niaa”, with captions like “I am an Ambassador of Quality & Standards”, “I am an entrepreneur building business on quality and standards”. More than 550 visitors participated in the selfie contest and posted their pictures in Instagram with #BIS@TNGSS2025.
The BIS stall was led by Smt. G. Bhavani, Scientist-F/Senior Director & Head, BIS Coimbatore along with other officials of the branch office were present to clear the queries of the visitors. Notably, Thiru. T. M. Anbarasan, Hon’ble Minister of MSME, Government of Tamil Nadu, and Thiru. S. S. Sivasankar, Hon’ble Minister of Transport Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, visited the BIS stall and appreciated the efforts of BIS. Another eminent personality who visited the BIS stall is Padmashri. Dr. G. Bakthavathsalam, a prominent surgeon, philanthropist, and chairman of the KG Hospital in Coimbatore. Apart from these personalities many Government officials visited BIS stall, overall the stall witnessed a steady flow of visitors throughout both the days.
Smt. G. Bhavani, Scientist-F/ Senior Director & Head, BIS Coimbatore participated as a speaker in one of the panel discussion themed “ Manu’futuring Tamil Nadu’s $1 Trillion Economy: Innovating Manufacturing for Manufacturing Innovations” and stressed on the critical role played by the Indian Standards play in the development of Industries especially that of Startups. She also addressed the queries raised by some of the Startup Founders.
Many queries were received on product certification schemes for furniture, footwear, Toys, BLDC Fans, Drones, etc. Many service sector industry representatives enquired about BIS Management System Certification for their business also.
BIS Coimbatore extends its sincere gratitude to StartupTN, Government of Tamil Nadu, all dignitaries, speakers, startups, MSME representatives, and other participants for their valuable support and contributions.
Through its participation in TNGSS 2025, BIS Coimbatore successfully educated visitors across all age groups on Indian Standards and the BIS certification process. The initiative achieved its objective by drawing the attention of a diverse audience, raising awareness about various BIS schemes such as Product Certification, Management Systems Certification, and Hallmarking. Startups were encouraged to adopt standards at an early stage to enhance their credibility and market readiness. Additionally, the BIS stall served as a point of contact and liaison for queries from innovators, incubators, industry participants, and government officials.
