Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Shri Pralhad Joshi has said that India is moving towards the goal of generating 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, in which wind energy will play a major part by contributing 100 GW.
Addressing the 7th edition of Windergy India 2025 in Chennai today, he urged the stakeholders of the industry including original equipment manufacturers and component manufacturers to enhance local content in wind projects to 85 percent from the current 64 percent, in line the Prime Minister’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in clean energy technologies. He said that increasing domestic value addition is essential to strengthen India’s clean energy supply chain amidst evolving global dynamics and rising geo political challenges.
Stating that India is a shining example of rapid progression in every sector, Shri. Pralhad Joshi said, India has the world’s fourth largest renewable energy capacity, and India’s wind energy capacity ranking also is the fourth in the world. He said under the visionary leadership of the Prime Minister the country’s ambition is to be global leader in every field be it economy, strategic or technological.
Commending Tamil Nadu, the minister said from the first wind farms to today’s cutting edge turbines, Tamil Nadu has led India’s clean energy journey and continues to inspire other states. He said Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh together contributes almost half of India’s total wind energy capacity which stands at 54 GW.
To unlock new areas, the Minister said the centre has launched a viability Gap Funding scheme for off shore wind projects and under this scheme, 500 MW project will be established off the coast of Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu. The initial result of the survey on this project, with the help of floating buoys has been completed and the results show the potential of generating wind energy in that area to very high. The Minister said tender for this project will be out by Feb 2026.
Listing the projects which have been completed, Mr. Pralhad Joshi said in the first six months of the year over 3 GW of wind capacity has been added and further said by March 2026 another 3 GW of wind capacity will be added, making it the highest ever annual addition much higher than last year’s 4 GW of wind power.
He said through sustained efforts in the last ten years, India has ensured that 50 percent of the country’s total installed electricity capacity now comes from no-fossil fuel sources. The Minister said the country’s total installed capacity is nearing 500 GW with non- fossil sources contributing over 257 GW. This rapid progress means that the share of traditional thermal power has significantly reduced.
Tamil Nadu Government Minister of Transport and Electricity Shri S.S. Sivashankar, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Economic Co-operation and Development, Germany Shri Johann Saathoff, were among those who participated in the event.
