The Tamil Nadu Postal Circle marked a step forward in the modernisation of campus-based postal services with the inauguration of the N-Gen (Next Generation) Post Office at the IIT Madras campus on 19 January 2026. The facility was inaugurated by Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, in the presence of Dr. Jane Prasad, Registrar, IIT Madras; Shri G. Natarajan, Postmaster General, Chennai City Region; Major Manoj M., Director Postal Services, Chennai City Region; and other distinguished guests.

This new post office inauguration is as part of the Department of Posts’ national initiative to revamp post offices located within educational institutions, the N-Gen Post Office aims to transform conventional postal spaces into youth-centric, technology-enabled service environments aligned with the expectations of the next generation. At IIT Madras, the post office has been reimagined as a more accessible, attractive, and engaging public service space for students and young users.

The interior ambience has been enhanced through curated artworks, improved lighting, and comfortable seating, creating a more open and contemporary environment while retaining the core functions of a post office.

The facility features smart counter setups and offers a comprehensive range of services, including Speed Post and parcel services, Savings Bank services, Postal Life Insurance, Aadhaar services, and digital payment facilities. Spacious waiting areas and well-defined service zones support efficient and user-friendly service delivery.

Additional amenities such as a coffee vending machine, free Wi-Fi, books, board games, charging ports, and other user-oriented facilities have been provided to further improve the experience for students and young users.

This initiative reflects the Department of Posts’ approach to strengthening its engagement with youth by adapting public service spaces to evolving user expectations, while continuing to deliver reliable and essential postal services.
