Captain Srinivasa Murthy Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CSMCARI), Chennai, celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 with a series of awareness programmes and yoga sessions aimed at promoting the benefits of yoga for healthy living and ageing. The celebrations were held in line with the nationwide observance led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 21 under the theme, “Yoga for Healthy Aging.”
As part of the observance, the institute displayed informative materials on yoga across its campus and disseminated awareness content through social media platforms to reach a wider audience.
Ahead of the main event, CSMCARI organized a yoga awareness programme and drawing competition at Government Model Higher Secondary School, MMDA Colony, Arumbakkam, on June 19. Around 300 students participated in the programme and learned about the importance of yoga in maintaining physical and mental well-being.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. S. Chitra, Assistant Director (In-Charge), CSMCARI. Dr. R. C. Supriya, Headmaster of the school, welcomed the participants. Dr. Hinduvasini Haritha, MD (Yoga & Naturopathy), delivered a lecture on the importance of yoga in daily life and conducted a Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) session for students.
The main Yoga Sangam event was held at the institute on June 21 with nearly 60 participants. Dr. S. Chitra welcomed the gathering, while Dr. Hinduvasini Haritha addressed participants on the significance of yoga and led the CYP session. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Soumya M. C., Research Officer (Ayurveda).
In addition, special lectures and yoga sessions for institute staff highlighted yoga’s role in preventive healthcare, holistic wellness, and healthy ageing, reaffirming CSMCARI’s commitment to promoting yoga in line with the vision of the Ministry of Ayush and CCRAS.
