Awareness programme on Nutrition held at Pallapatti

Bharatidasan University, Department of Social Work organised awareness programme on Nutrition and Health in Pallapatti village Manikandam Block of Tiruchirapalli on Tuesday.

Dr N Rajavel, Dr M SureshKumar, Dr Sivakami faculty of Department of Social Work, Bharatidasan University, Tiruchirapalli addressed the function. 

Mr. K Devi Padmanabhan Field Publicity Officer Central Bureau of Communication Tiruchirapalli in his special address said that Poshan Maah Nutrition month is celebrated in September to create awareness about importance of Nutrition and Health. He said that the theme for this year is Suposhith Bharat meaning Nutritious India, Sakshar Bharat-Literate India and Sasakth Bharat Empowered India. He spoke about importance of having nutritious food especially leafy vegetables and easily available moringa leaves to strengthen immunity. He pointed out that central and state governments are implementing various schemes for the benefit of public. 

He said that International Year of Millets is celebrated under United Nations accepting India’s suggestion. Millets are readily available in villages and this should be part of our diet to ensure nutrition and immunity. He said that Tiruchirapalli has topped Clean air cities in Tamil Nadu. He urged people to cooperate with authorities to maintain cleanliness. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on October 2 Gandhi Jayanthi day in 2014. Under SBM, Government had built more than 11 crore individual household latrines so that people avoid outside defecation. He asked people to avoid usage of one-time use plastics as it will lead to pollution and block ground water. He asked people to segregate wastes as biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes while giving to sanitary workers. He urged people not to throw waste in public places as this will lead to spread of epidemics and deadly diseases like Dengue spread through mosquitoes. 

Mr. S Arunkumar, FPA Tiruchirapalli spoke about various schemes of government for the progress of girl child. He spoke about Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Educate the child to protect the child schemes. He said that Sukanya Samridhi scheme Selvamakal Semippu Thittam is popular to protect the future of girl child. The account under the scheme can be opened in post office or scheduled bank for any girl child from birth till the age of 10. Minimum deposit is 250 and maximum is 1.5 lakh in financial year and contribution has to be deposited for 15 years. Account will mature when the girl child reaches 21 years and can be prematurely closed at girl reaching 18 years for marriage expenses. 

Students of Social Work department of Bharatidasan University performed traditional folk dance and drama skits to create awareness on prevention of drug abuse, alcohol, smoking which are harmful to health. 

The five day Rural Camp 2023 by Social Work Department of Bharatidasan University was inaugurated at Nagamangalam on September 11.
