Bureau of Indian Standards, the National Standards Body of India is a statutory body functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It operates various schemes like Product Certification (ISI mark), Management Systems Certification, Hall Marking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts and Laboratory Services for the benefit of the industry and in turn aiming at consumer protection.
Bureau of Indian Standards, Chennai Branch Office organized the BIS - Manak Manthan Programme on “ Derby Shoes- IS 17043:2024 Part 1 Shoes for services; Part 2 Shoes for general purpose” at Hotel Vestin Park, Egmore, Chennai Today 22 May 2024.
Smt.G.Bhavani, Scientist-E/Director & Head(Chennai Branch Office) welcomed the Chief Guest , Dignitaries and participants. She informed that Derby shoes, a style of footwear characterized by their open lacing system. Derby shoes have the facing stitched on top of the vamp, creating an open space between the quarters. This feature provides more flexibility and allows for easier adjustment to accommodate various foot shapes and sizes. Derby shoes typically have a sleek and elegant appearance, making them suitable for both formal and casual occasions.
Shri USP Yadav, Scientist-G & Deputy Director General (Southern Region) while explaining the Programme Objectives mentioned BIS is organizing series of discussion-programmes titled “Manak Manthan” for the benefit of industry which is scheduled on every month, and is envisaged to launch new standards and share important revisions / amendments and wide circulation drafts to local manufacturers, Industrial and Trade Bodies, Chambers of Commerce, Industry Associations, PSU’s or organizations who use such products, Government departments, Regulatory bodies, Laboratories, Civil society groups and Academia.
He also mentioned that The Central government has, through a Footwear made from Leather and other Materials (Quality Control) Order, 2024. made it mandatory for Derby shoes manufacturers to comply with the requirements of the Indian Standard by obtaining a licence for BIS Certification on or before 01 August 2024. Overall, compliance with these standards ensures that manufacturers produce footwear that meets quality benchmarks, benefiting both consumers and the industry as a whole.
Dr. K J Sreeram, Director, CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai is the Chief Guest and during his inaugural speech , he explained that these standards cover various aspects, including manufacturing, design, materials, and performance specifications to ensure the quality, durability, and safety of the footwear produced. He also mentioned that , in this context the Manak Manthan programme is being organized by BIS to raise awareness on the requirements of the standard.
Shri Sreejith Mohan, Scientist-D During his technical Presentation, informed the details on IS 17043 Part 1 specifies the requirements for shoes intended for services including armed forces & police forces and IS 17043 Part 2 specifies the requirements for shoes intended for general purposes. These shoes are designed to cater a variety of needs, including formal, semi-formal, casual, and other everyday uses.
Earlier, Shri D Jeevanantham, Scientist-D, BIS explained the participants about activities of BIS and the latest initiatives of BIS including e-BIS & BIS Care App
Around 150 Stakeholders on the subject matter attended the Programme.
