Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore, organized a skill development training on Google Earth Engine (GEE) for 33 participants on 21.12.2024. The training aimed to equip participants with hands-on experience in geospatial analysis. Dr. A. Raviraj, Dean (Engg.) emphasized the importance of GEE skills, highlighting its relevance in remote sensing research, climate monitoring and natural resource management.
The training program was structured into key modules, starting with an introduction to Google Earth Engine and its capabilities as a cloud-based platform. Participants learned to set up their GEE accounts, navigate its interface and explore the vast GEE Data Catalog, which offers access to satellite imagery and climatic data. Dr. Balaji Kannan, Professor and Head, Department of Soil and Water Conservation Engineering, led the lectures and practical demonstrations. He guided participants through the process of Land Use Land Cover (LULC) mapping and timeseries analysis of climatic data, using hands-on exercises to reinforce the concepts.
In addition to LULC mapping, the training focused on the analysis of climatic timeseries data. Participants learned how to acquire, prepare and visualize climate-related datasets using GEE. The hands-on sessions allowed them to apply these techniques to analyze land cover changes and assess long-term climate trends. Participants were provided with resource materials, ensuring that they could continue to practice and apply their newfound skills in real-world applications.
The training concluded with the awarding of certificates to all participants. Dr. C. S. Sumathi, Professor (Comp. Sci.), played a key role in organizing and conducting the event, ensuring its smooth execution. This skill development training not only enhanced the participants technical expertise in GEE but also underscored the importance of developing geospatial skills in addressing global challenges, particularly in agriculture and environmental management.
