Every year, Independence Day is celebrated at the Thoranamalai Sri Murugan Temple located on the Tenkasi–Kadayam road. Accordingly, the 79th Independence Day was celebrated in a grand manner. On this occasion, the national flag was hoisted in the temple premises. Former army veterans were honored.
Following this, students from Muthumalai Puram Aathinarayanan–Chandraleela Memorial Evening Study Center, Pulankulam Seva Bharati School, and Ilathur Government School took part. They performed cultural programs dressed up as various national leaders and also in the guise of Goddess Amman.
Inaugurating the event, temple hereditary trustee S. Shenbhagaraman said: “As the nation celebrates its 79th Independence Day after gaining freedom, rural students still face difficulties in speaking or writing fluently in English. The government should pay special attention to this and create a separate department dedicated to improving English proficiency among rural students.”
In addition, on account of the last Friday of the Tamil month of Aadi, the temple conducted a Varna Kalasa Pooja. Sacred water was fetched from the hill spring and used for special abhishekam and rituals to the deity.
All devotees who attended were given miniature national flags to wear on their shirts. Annadhanam (free food offering) was served from morning till evening. The entire event was organized by the temple’s hereditary trustee, Shenbhagaraman.
