Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body of India under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Government of India, organized the “MANAK SAMVAD – Sensitization Meeting with New BIS Licensees” at the BIS Chennai Branch Office, C.I.T Campus, Taramani. Certificates were formally handed over to the newly licensed manufacturers across various sectors, whose BIS licences were conferred during the months of September and October.
BIS oversees key national quality assurance schemes including Product Certification (ISI Mark), Management Systems Certification, Hallmarking of Gold and Silver Jewellery/Artefacts, and Laboratory Services, all contributing to strengthening India’s quality ecosystem. Grant of BIS licence involves rigorous scrutiny of manufacturing infrastructure, quality-control mechanisms, testing capabilities, and conformity to the relevant Indian Standards.
The programme commenced with a Welcome Address by Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist-F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office, who welcomed all new licensees into the BIS system. He emphasized that Indian Standards play a pivotal role in nation-building by enhancing product quality, safety, and reliability across industries. He highlighted that adherence to standards not only raises the competitiveness of Indian manufacturers but also strengthens national infrastructure and supports the vision of building a quality-driven economy.
This was followed by Inaugural Address by Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Scientist-G & Deputy Director General (South), BIS. She welcomed the new licensees to the “BIS Family” and elaborated on how BIS certification will support their business growth by boosting market acceptance and consumer trust. Dr. Meenakshi underscored BIS’ efforts in harmonizing national standards with international benchmarks and promoting sustainability through a circular economy approach. She said, “Standardization and Management Systems Certification from BIS can empower MSMEs and start-ups alike by improving product quality, enhancing competitiveness, and opening doors to export markets. In an era of resource constraints, embracing sustainability and resource efficiency is not an option but a necessity for long-term success.”
Subsequent technical sessions included a detailed presentation on the Operation of BIS Licence and the usage of the BIS Care App by Smt. Anurita Nidhi Hemrom, Scientist-C / Deputy Director, BIS Chennai, followed by a session on the Roles and Responsibilities of Licensees by Shri Sreejith Mohan J, Scientist-D / Joint Director, BIS Chennai Branch Office, who outlined the compliance expectations and key obligations of licence holders.
A dedicated Management System Certification workshop was conducted by Shri K. Vijayaveeran, Scientist-E / Director, MSCO-I (South). He explained the benefits of ISO Certification, its role in enhancing organisational efficiency, and how BIS provides a simplified, industry-friendly pathway for obtaining ISO certifications. He emphasized that ISO standards serve as an essential tool for quality improvement and global market acceptance.
The programme also included the distribution of welcome kits, followed by an interactive Open House session where licensees shared their queries and feedback with BIS officials. The event concluded with the presentation of certificates by Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist-F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai Branch Office, to representatives of various sector manufacturers whose BIS licences were conferred during the months of September and October. The licensees appreciated the efforts of BIS and expressed their satisfaction and gratitude on receiving the licence.
