BJP Tenkasi District President Ananthan Ayyasamy yesterday met Union Minister for Communications Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia in New Delhi and submitted five petitions seeking historical recognition as well as major improvements in postal and telecommunications infrastructure for Tenkasi and southern Tamil Nadu.
The first petition sought the issuance of commemorative postage stamps honouring King Pooli Thevar of Nerkattumseval and his Chief-Commandant Venni Kaladi, recognising their place among the earliest leaders of armed resistance against British colonial rule. Ayyasamy proposed that the stamps be released at Nerkattumseval on 1 September 2027.
The second petition sought the creation of a separate Tenkasi Postal Division, establishment of an additional Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) at Tenkasi Head Post Office, and extension of India Post-assisted BSNL SIM delivery services to the district.
The third petition requested immediate sanction and funding for a permanent departmental building for Puliyangudi Sub Post Office, utilising land already owned by the Department of Posts.
The fourth petition focused on strengthening digital connectivity. It sought the expeditious completion of pending 4G towers, priority mobile coverage for villages along the Western Ghats fringe on public-safety grounds, and a district-level review of BharatNet service readiness in Tenkasi and Virudhunagar districts.
The fifth petition proposed establishing a stronger C-DOT and Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) footprint in southern Tamil Nadu, including a telecom design/incubation facility and a rural-connectivity field test bed in Tenkasi to encourage innovation and develop solutions suited to rural India.
“These proposals bring together recognition of Tenkasi’s proud history with practical measures to strengthen connectivity, public safety, innovation and access to essential services. I requested the Hon’ble Minister’s favourable and time-bound consideration,” Ayyasamy said.
