Minister K. Jagadeeswari has taken steps to address the livelihood issues continuously faced by weavers in the Rajapalayam Assembly constituency. She personally met the concerned Minister and urged that an immediate solution be found to their problems.
Thousands of weavers in Rajapalayam, Seithur, Thalavaipuram, Punalveli and surrounding areas depend on the handloom industry for their livelihood. The weavers have been continuously demanding fixation of wages for the new variety of Pongal free sarees, compensation for the period during which they remained without work, and the purchase of sarees that have accumulated in cooperative societies.
The weavers had earlier represented their demands to K. Jagadeeswari, MLA from the Rajapalayam Assembly constituency and Minister for Social Welfare and Women’s Rights.
As a follow-up, Minister Jagadeeswari, who was in Erode, personally met Vijay Balaji, Minister for Handlooms and Textiles, and explained the demands and issues faced by weavers in the Rajapalayam constituency.
In particular, she urged the Minister to take appropriate steps to ensure continuous employment for the weavers, fix suitable wages for the new variety of sarees and procure the sarees that have accumulated in cooperative societies.
Minister Jagadeeswari has taken the initiative to directly convey the constituency’s demands to the concerned Minister and work towards resolving them. She said that appropriate action would be taken soon on the demands of the weavers.
Minister Vijay Balaji assured her that he would immediately hold discussions with officials of the department and take steps to resolve the problems faced by the weavers at the earliest.
