PhonePe and Mastercard have partnered to launch an exclusive Tap & Pay feature for Mastercard cardholders in India. The feature allows users to make secure in-store payments by tapping their NFC-enabled smartphones at payment terminals via the PhonePe app. It also supports tokenized e-commerce transactions, making payments seamless and safe both in India and internationally.
Speaking on the collaboration, Deep Agrawal, Head of Payments at PhonePe, said, “We’re delighted to collaborate with Mastercard to bring device-based tokenization to millions of PhonePe users. This functionality combines convenience and security, enabling contactless payments at physical stores and safer online transactions—all within the familiar PhonePe app.” Ravi Datla, Senior Vice President, Products & Solutions, South Asia, Mastercard, added, “This collaboration marks a key step in broadening the reach of digital payments, empowering Mastercard cardholders to Tap & Pay at merchant outlets both in India and abroad, making transactions smarter and safer.”
Cardholders can securely save their Mastercard credit, debit, and prepaid cards on the PhonePe app once, after which they can enjoy fast, frictionless payments at NFC-enabled terminals and online. The new feature will be rolled out to Mastercard users in phases, combining Mastercard’s global tokenization expertise with PhonePe’s vast network of over 618 million users to strengthen India’s rapidly growing digital economy.
